Former Celtic player Stuart Gray dies aged 50.
In the 1990s, he was a player for Parkhead, and in 1998, he joined Reading. Towards the end of his career, he also played for Rushden & Diamonds.
Grey, a Scotland under-21 player, disclosed last year that he was battling cancer.
“Everyone at Celtic is deeply saddened by the news that former Celt Stuart Grey passed away after illness at the age of 50,” the club said in a statement.
“The midfielder came through Celtic’s development systems and made his debut in a 1-0 home victory over Aberdeen on May 1, 1993. He is the nephew of Frank Grey and the son of Eddie, two stalwarts of the storied Leeds United team of the early 1970s.
“He only scored once in 32 games for the Hoops, and that came in a 4-1 victory at home against Raith Rovers in May 1996.
“Stuart played for three years with Tommy Burns’ Reading team in 1998 before moving on to play for Rushden & Diamonds for four years, totalling 142 appearances.
“During this extremely difficult time, Stuart’s family and friends are in everyone at Celtic Park’s thoughts and prayers.
“Today’s Celtics game versus Ross County will feature black armbands as a memorial to Stuart.
