Patrick Mahomes devastated as Kansas City Chiefs WR suffers gruesome injury right in front of him at training camp
After sustaining what appears to be a major injury, Justin Watson stunned Patrick Mahomes and the
rest of the squad. He lay on the ground for a few minutes before having to leave practice so that trainers
could examine his left foot.
Fans and teammates were holding their breath as Justin Watson sustained an injury on a routine pass
reception. Before being wheeled off to the locker room, trainers assessed Watson on the field, according
to Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. The extent of his injury is still unknown, but The Athletic reports that his
probable absence would have a major impact on the Chiefs’ lineup and create some optimism because
the wide receiver was able to walk to the sideline.
A glimmer of hope
One bright spot, though, may exist: Watson was spotted sitting on the front seat of the cart as opposed to
lying in the back. This may indicate that his injury is not as bad as first thought, providing a small
window of hope for a speedier recovery.
Watson’s injury could provide other receivers an opportunity to establish themselves on the starting
squad. Because of Xavier Worthy’s ongoing illness, there is more competition for those highly sought-
after reps. Increased practice time will benefit players like Nikko Remigio, Skyy Moore, Mecole
Hardman, Justyn Ross, and Kadarius Toney who are vying for a spot as the season gets closer.
There would be a confrontation between the Chiefs’ backup receivers, who are all motivated to step up
and improve their careers, if Watson is unable to return quickly. It is hoped that Watson’s illness is not
life-threatening and that he will be able to resume training shortly.
