Dominic Smith’s Boston Red Sox season ended on a low note.
Smith was dismissed after 83 appearances, the Red Sox said on Tuesday.
The Red Sox signed Smith on May 1 to cover for Triston Casas at first base while he was on the injured list with a ruptured rib cartilage.
Smith joined with the Tampa Bay Rays as a free agent late in spring training. He began the 2024 season at their Triple-A affiliate in Durham before signing with the Red Sox via an opt-out clause in his contract.
Smith’s career began later than expected after signing with Boston. The 29-year-old started to hit.From May 1 to 30, he hit 179/.256/.256 in 25 games, with 86 plate appearances, 12 RBI, and 19 strikeouts.
From May 31 to August 15, Smith appeared in 58 games, with a slash line of.263/.344,/.450 with 22 extra-base hits and 22 RBI in 192 plate appearances. Casas was activated from the IL the day after his final appearance, on August 15.
Smith, like Casas, is a left-handed hitter, so his presence on the Boston club was unneeded. Masataka Yoshida, the team’s designated hitter, shares this attribute.
Given his performance prior to his release, Smith would most likely appeal to a contender looking to add another hitter to their lineup for the stretch run.
Smith was taken in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the New York Mets and made his MLB debut four years later. Before signing with the Washington Nationals in 2023, he spent six seasons with the Mets.
Smith has played 683 games for three different teams, with a career slash line of.247/.314/.405, 64 home runs, and 259 RBI.
