SEALED DEAL: Leeds United pays a whopping amount for the acquirement of the the clubs former astounding star.

Leeds United Agree Fee For Former Player To Return

The 31-year-old joined Salford City on a permanent loan from Fleetwood Town last summer, and he has since started playing for the team. He was a constant for the Ammies in League Two during a disappointing season that saw a change in leadership.

Adam Pope of the BBC announced the deal this morning, and Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider added that Salford will receive a “six-figure fee” from United in exchange for the Doncaster-born goalkeeper. He played a part in the EFL Cup upset against Leeds in the second round, which ended with the fourth-tier team winning on penalties.

As former Moor Lane goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson was sold to Polish team Rakow Czestochowa yesterday, Cairns, who was in the final year of his contract, was signed by Leeds. Their former keeper’s departure opens up a non-homegrown position for the upcoming campaign.

After advancing through Elland Road’s academy system, the goalkeeper played just once for the Yorkshire club, against Blackpool, during Simon Grayson’s tenure. He would eventually leave Leeds to join Fleetwood Town, having previously been farmed out to non-league teams Barrow and Stalybridge.

Prior to Karl Robinson, the previous manager of MK Dons, joining Salford in January of 2023–2024, Cairns served as the team’s captain. Elliot Watt, a 24-year-old midfielder, was subsequently given the armband for the balance of the season before he transferred to Burton Albion.

Following Joe Rodon’s permanent transfer last week, Leeds has added a new player via the door. Archie Gray has moved to Tottenham Hotspur. Daniel Farke’s team will have three veteran alternatives in the goalie, Karl Darlow, and Illan Meslier.

Salford is now without a goalkeeper due to the sale of Cairns; they will deploy a trialist in their first preseason friendly on Sunday away to Northern Irish Premiership team Crusaders.
