Gale Sayers, a running back inducted into the Chicago Bears Hall of Fame, passed yesterday at the age of 77.
David Baker, the president and CEO of the Hall of Fame, made the following statement:
“With the passing of Chicago Bears star Gale Sayers, all football fans mourn the loss of one of the finest players to ever play this game. He was modest, polite, and always willing to give a teammate credit for a crucial block—the epitome of a team player. Gale was a remarkable man who triumphed over numerous challenges in both his life and NFL career.
America was captivated by the National Football League’s “Kansas Comet” when he suddenly appeared on the scene. For his on-field accomplishments and his overall demeanour, Gale was a first-ballot pick for the Hall of Fame, even though his career was cut short by injuries, limiting him to just 68 NFL games.
Gale’s passing is felt deeply by the Pro Football Hall of Fame family as a whole. His wife Ardie and their entire family are in our thoughts and prayers. His legacy will always be preserved and used as motivation for upcoming generations. Until he is buried, the Hall of Fame flag will fly at half staff.
