Every NFL team is expected to stay under the salary cap, as is the case with every season. If a team is unable to stay under the cap for any reason, they risk an NFL investigation and any associated consequences.

The league was a little skeptical when the internal salary cap report was released on Monday because of a possible salary cap violation by the Houston Texans.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the error did happen and it had to do with the contract renegotiation that kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn had back in March of this year.
“Fairbairn resigned on March 11, 2024, and the agreement’s last year was reverted from 2027 to 2026. At the time, this ought to have resulted in an acceleration of $399,781. It didn’t, according to Florio. That’s important because the Texans had no cap room on March 11 and 12, 2024. They would have gone beyond the cap for two days if the acceleration had happened at that moment.”

Even though the problem did occur, the National Football League was unable to identify it. Had they done so, the Texans would have had to address it and Fairbairn’s contract would not have been permitted.

Although there aren’t many misses in the NFL, accidents do happen, and this is one of them.

The NFL sent Florio a statement that stated, “The contract was properly submitted and reported by the Club but recorded incorrectly by the Management Council.” The league’s issue was fixed yesterday with the Club’s Salary Cap adjustment. There was never any attempt to obtain a competitive edge. Since the Club behaved appropriately, there won’t be any punishment.

The Houston Texans currently seem to be in the clear, as no additional information has been released.
