Former NFL Star Jacoby Jones Passes Away at 40

Jones played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, and Los Angeles Chargers after being selected in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. In season 16 of Dancing With the Stars, he also participated and placed third.

Jones’s career peaked while he was a member of the Baltimore Ravens. He gained notoriety for his outstanding efforts throughout the 2012 postseason, especially for the incredible touchdown throw that tied the game at 70 yards. In Super Bowl XLVII, he broke the record with the longest kick return score in Super Bowl history, measuring 108 yards. This play was a key factor in the Ravens’ 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers suffered their first-ever Super Bowl loss in this game.

Jones went back to work as a wide receiver coach at Lane College in 2017 after retiring. Prior to joining Alabama State’s faculty in 2022, he served as a coach at Morgan State as well.

NFL players and supporters paid tribute to Jones on social media after learning of his passing. The Baltimore Ravens issued the following sincere statement to convey their sadness:

“When we heard about Jacoby Jones’s passing, we were devastated. Jacoby had a special talent for making connections with everyone he met. His unique presence, infused with joy, love, and charisma, could illuminate any space and lift any depressing mood. In addition to his achievements on the football field, Jacoby will be remembered for his lifetime friendships with many members of the Baltimore community, the Ravens organization, and every neighborhood he has called home. We send Jacoby’s family our sincere condolences as we all start to come to terms with this tragic

loss.

John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, also posted a heartfelt message:

“I cherished Jacoby Jones.” All of us did. His passion, energy, and love for people were contagious. He was a source of light. He was the beloved son of Ms. Emily, his devoted mother. They were really near. He was a devout man. My best football play occurred right before a late-game kickoff return against the Vikings in a snowstorm shootout, when Jacoby was having a conversation with his mother in the end zone. After then, Jacoby ran to grab the ball and return it for a score. My favorite private moment with Jacoby was always seeing his happy, smiling face. Jacoby, rest in peace in Jesus’ embrace.

On social media, head coach of the Steelers Mike Tomlin also posted his condolences:

“My deepest sympathies go out to thoughts and prayers are with Jacoby Jones’ family during this trying time. He was a pleasure to coach while he was a member of the Steelers.

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Jacoby Jones left a lasting impression on the people he interacted with and the places he impacted. His extraordinary talent, contagious charm, and the happiness he provided to countless lives will live on in our memories.
