NFL: Brandon Aiyuk Wants to Be Paid Like a No. 1 Receiver. But Is He? - Athlon Sports

Foxborough, Pennsylvania Several Pro Bowl-caliber receivers have requested trades this offseason. The Patriots are still interested in signing such a player as of right now, should the chance present itself.

Following months of fruitless contract talks, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk asked for a trade last week. Pro Football Talk claims that the Patriots contacted the 49ers on the Pro Bowl player and offered their 2024 second-round selection in the draft, but they were promptly rejected.

Jerod Mayo, the new head coach of the Patriots, was questioned on Tuesday during his first press conference of training camp about if the team was still interested in acquiring a veteran receiver.

Mayo stated, “We always want to have the best players on our team.” “However that appears. As you can see, we also rank third on the waiver wire. We’ll have the chance to strengthen our roster when a few talented players are released for a variety of reasons. Thus, if you’re going to ask me when you’re sitting there, “Would we take a big player regardless of position?” Indeed. Indeed. not just now but also in the times ahead.

Aiyuk was reportedly looking for “in the neighborhood of $28 million per year,” according to Pro Football Talk. According to the article, Aiyuk’s desired salary was ready to be paid by “five teams.” The Patriots seem to have been among those teams, as reports indicate they made the 49ers an offer for Aiyuk at selection No. 34.
Eliot Wolf utilized that second-round pick to move down three spots to 37, where the Patriots selected receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, after San Francisco rejected their offer. Then, in the fourth round, the Patriots selected receiver Javon Baker after taking a double dip at the position.

According to Overthecap, the Patriots have the most cap space in the NFL right now ($43.58 million), therefore they can afford a player like Aiyuk.

Tee Higgins, a receiver from Cincinnati who also asked for a trade, is another player to keep an eye on. Currently, though, reports coming out of Cincinnati and San Francisco indicate that both teams are committed on winning this season and neither wants to sell Higgins or Aiyuk.

Both receivers are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents next offseason – if they don’t agree to extensions with their clubs, get traded, or are franchise-tagged.
