Chargers Trade Candidate Could Join Cowboys, Panthers

Running back Isaiah Spiller of the Los Angeles Chargers may be traded before he even plays a down

under Jim Harbaugh’s coaching after just two seasons on the team. Generally regarded by draft pundits

as a steal, Spiller was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The running back finished his

college career with 2,993 rushing yards, 25 rushing touchdowns, 585 receiving yards, and one more

score. The Texas A&M graduate has only 137 rushing yards and no touchdowns on 55 career tries (2.5

yards per carry), so sadly, that success has not translated to the NFL level.

Maybe he was not the right match for Brandon Staley’s offense, but under Harbaugh, he will not have

much of an opportunity to establish himself. In spite of Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, after losing

Austin Ekeler to the Washington Commanders, will probably prevent Spiller from playing. Isaiah Spiller

would benefit from a change of scenery, and Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler thinks the team should look

elsewhere for him. The Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers might be prepared to exchange

conditional picks, though nobody will give up too much for the former fourth-round pick.

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have been unusually silent throughout the 2024 offseason despite his earlier pledge to go all in. Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is holding out, the team has not added many noteworthy players, and starting quarterback Dak Prescott is about to enter his last year of contract. While Isaiah Spiller will not solve every problem, the trade candidate might contribute to this lackluster backfield.

Though he is back, Ezekiel Elliott is not the same player that finished first in the league in rushing yards per game the previous three years. The nine-year veteran’s decline with age is evident in his lack of explosiveness, physicality, and general athleticism that once made him a top-five pick. In this backfield with him is the lackluster team of Royce Freeman, Deuce Vaughn, and Rico Dowdle. While Isaiah Spiller is also unable of handling starting roles, none of these guys can, and a move might increase this team’s depth. Carl Lawson’s recent addition suggests Dallas is still willing to make roster adjustments, so maybe Spiller on America’s Team can live up to his pre-draft potential.

Emergency Depth In Carolina

Jonathan Brooks, a second-round selection of the Carolina Panthers, is their long-term running back solution. As the Texas product recovers from an ACL injury, they still need to come up with a temporary fix. Although Chuba Hubbard is a good short-term starter, earlier in camp the running back had a near-accident. Even though he should be well in the long term, this injury highlights the roster’s lack of depth. Even though Isaiah Spiller is a trade target rather than Miles Sanders, he might still be a better player.

Sanders, who signed a decent contract this past offseason, turned out to be among the league’s least productive running backs. Even with a significant cash outlay, the former Eagle lost the starting job early in the season and was never able to recoup it. Sanders and Spiller might contend for the same position, with the fourth-round pick having the best chance of winning.
