Brad Keller will not be leaving the Red Sox organisation, after all.
Multiple reports Keller invoked his right to enter MLB free agency on Tuesday, following Boston’s option of him to Triple-A on Sunday. But in a follow-up report, SoxProspects’ Chris Hatfield stated Keller re-signed with the Red Sox on a minor-league contract after declining the option. The right-hander was in the Worcester Red Sox clubhouse on Wednesday, according to MLB.com’s Chris Henrique.
Keller signed a major league contract with Boston in late May, after the Chicago White Sox designated him for assignment. Alex Cora and team deployed the 29-year-old completely out of the bullpen after he was primarily a starting pitcher for the first six seasons of his MLB career. Keller participated in 10 games for the Red Sox before opting out of his previous contract, recording a 5.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings.
The former Kansas City Royal was not the only pitcher optioned by the Red Sox on Sunday; Brennan Bernardino was also demoted. In similar moves, Boston activated starter Brayan Bello from the injured list and signed left-hander Chase Shugart.
Keller joined the WooSox on an eventful day, when two of the Red Sox’s “big three” prospects, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel, made their Triple-A debuts.
