Former MLB player from Atlanta ‘tragically passes away’ while coaching son’s baseball team
Unexpectedly, a former major leaguer who was born in Atlanta during his father’s Braves career passed away.
ATLANTA — At the age of 43, a former Major League Baseball player who was born in Atlanta during his
father’s early 1980s Braves team unexpectedly passed away on Thursday.
According to the Long Beach Little League Instagram page, Sean Burroughs “tragically passed away”
after collapsing while coaching his son’s little league team in Long Beach, California.
Burroughs played in the major leagues for seven seasons, primarily with the Padres, Rays,
Diamondbacks, and Twins. From 1977 to 1980, his father, Jeff Burroughs, the 1974 American League
MVP, spent four seasons as a player for the Atlanta Braves. In 1980, Sean Burroughs was born in
Atlanta.
Following their relocation to California, The Long Beach Little League World Series squad that won
consecutive titles in 1992 and 1993 featured Burroughs as a star player. After pitching two straight no-
hitters and leading his team to yet another championship in the 1993 Little League World Series, he
went down in Little League history.
Burroughs was one of the top prospects in baseball after being drafted ninth overall in the 1998 MLB
Draft. He signed with the Padres and opted to forgo college at the University of Southern California.
In 2000, Burroughs helped the United States win gold at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Over the course of his MLB career, Burroughs appeared in 528 games, hitting .278 with 12 home runs and 143 RBI.
