Djokovic Defies Injury Scare To Clinch Olympic Semi-Final Berth
After facing a serious injury scare, Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to maintain his hopes of winning an Olympic gold medal. Djokovic won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) despite battling a knee injury that forced him to retire from the French Open.
On Court Philippe Chatrier, the Serbian got off to a great start. In the fourth game, he broke Tsitsipas, and he held serve to win the opening set. Tsitsipas, though, got off to a strong start in the second set and won both games to take a 4-0 lead. Djokovic leveled the score at 5-5 after mounting a comeback to win three straight games.
Djokovic has now reached four Singles semi-finals at the Olympics, twice as many as any other player since tennis returned to the Summer Olympics in 1988. His serving was particularly noteworthy, scoring six aces compared to Tsitsipas’ three and saving four of six break points faced.
Djokovic’s serve was a key component of his victory the entire match. He stopped four of the six break points that were directed at him and managed six aces. These numbers demonstrate his capacity to perform well under duress and keep his cool during pivotal periods in the game. Tennis TV (@TennisTV) celebrated his comeback from 0–4 in the second set and saved three set points to book a place in the Olympics semi-finals with the tweet, “ONLY. NOVAK. DJOKOVIC.”
