Wigan Athletic sign Calvin Ramsay on season-long loan from Liverpool

Calvin Ramsay facing long-term injury layoff as right-back returns to  Liverpool - Liverpool FC - This Is Anfield

The Scotland international, who played for Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers the previous season, has joined Shaun Maloney’s team.

Ramsay, who was born in Aberdeen, made his professional debut for the team in his hometown in March 2021 and became well-known as a gifted player almost away.

Ramsay made 33 appearances for Aberdeen in the 2021–2022 season, including six in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
He was nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year and won the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year award for his outstanding performances.

Due to Ramsay’s talent, he was approached by multiple Premier League clubs, which resulted in his June 2022 transfer to Liverpool.

In November 2022, he made his Liverpool debut against Napoli. Two weeks later, he was awarded his first Scotland cap.

He spent his first season with Liverpool on loan at Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers after suffering an injury.

Ramsay declared himself ecstatic to be joining Wigan, saying, “I’m thrilled. The manager and I met two weeks ago, and it happened quite quickly. We had a great talk right away, and we clicked right away. I can’t wait for the season to begin.

“There was a real excitement when I was driving to the training ground, and I am hungry to get going and show everyone what I can do,” he continued. I am eager to go since it is a great opportunity at a great club.

“It is with great pleasure that Calvin has joined us on a season-long loan,” First Team Manager Shaun Maloney said. An esteemed athlete, he has already played for his nation and earned experience in the Scottish Premiership and the EFL. Calvin has a strong desire to see our squad succeed this season.

Gregor Rioch, the sporting director, also voiced his happiness, saying, “We’re really happy to bring Calvin to Wigan Athletic.” He’s a wonderful player of tremendous calibre and a valuable asset to our club.
