On June 5, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed wide receiver Cody Thompson, a former member of the Seattle Seahawks, just about a week after they dismissed Devin Thompkins.

Thompson’s agent, Equity Sports, made the signing public on social media. Since 2019, Thompson has been on and off NFL practice squads. He previously played for the Seahawks under former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

Thompson signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and was initially used by the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Seattle Seahawks. He also spent time on the practice squad during that season. Then, from 2020 to 2023, he played for the Seahawks for the majority of his career, making 12 appearances in regular season games. In those contests, Thompson participated in special teams and recorded three tackles in addition to a fumble recovery.

With special teams, Cody Thompson might succeed, but there’s no guarantee.

Thompson stands to gain from playing special teams as he attempts to break into the Buccaneers lineup. The most statistically effective wide receiver in the preseason in 2022, Tyler Johnson, was dismissed by Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles because the former Minnesota standout didn’t play special teams.

But that doesn’t make Thompson’s route to the roster easy. Thompkins, a receiver the Bucs dismissed on May 30, has spent the previous two seasons not just catching receptions but also returning kicks and punts.

Regarding the impending receiver competition, Bowles told reporters on June 4 that “we’ve got a lot of competition come training camp.” “Some of the guys we have are going to surprise a few people.” I can’t wait to see them with pads. We’re eager to follow its development.

Thompson enjoyed a prosperous collegiate career at Toledo as a receiver. Between 2016 and 2018, he had 181 receptions for 3,312 yards and 11 touchdowns while playing with the Rockets. During his seven games played in the NFL, Thompson has only ever caught one pass. It happened during the previous season.
