Drew Smyly will be back in the Chicago Cubs’ bullpen tonight when they play the St. Louis Cardinals. Due to a hip ailment, the seasoned pitcher hasn’t pitched since April.
Smyly appears to provide a steady presence from the left side with a rough bullpen. The Cubs will rely on him and Luke Little as left-handed options now that he is fully fit.
Although Smyly’s 4.97 ERA doesn’t seem good, it is hoped that his troubles are primarily related to the injury he is still healing from. Everyone must be healthy for the Cubs to try to get back to their previous level.
Smyly made a commanding appearance in one rehab session. After working three innings, the veteran managed to strike out five batters. This version of him would be a huge asset to the Cubs’ bullpen going ahead.
Though it’s possible that Smyly’s return to the mound was an exception, the club should take encouragement from it. If anything, he gives Craig Counsell a new tool to deal with.
The bullpen’s flaws have caused this rotation, which has been so strong, to collapse. It’s been difficult for the Cubs to field a consistent team because of injuries and general inefficiency.
Mark Leiter Jr. has continued to be a rock star, and the newest Cub, Tyson Miller, has been a shining light. There are some timid moves towards regaining control, but things might finally be improving.
Better still would be if Smyly’s return produces outcomes. If the Cubs are going to have any chance of improving this season, they will undoubtedly need it.
