After OU signed one of the best players in the state of Oklahoma on Tuesday, the Sooners’ momentum in the 2025 recruiting class continues.
Athlete CJ Nickson, a 4-star prospect from Weatherford, Oklahoma, made his commitment to Oklahoma on Tuesday.
Nickson is ranked as the top player in Oklahoma, the ninth best edge rusher in the nation, and the 74th overall prospect by 247Sports. The Eagles’ star player had offers from Georgia, Tennessee, Notre Dame, and other schools, but earlier this month he reduced his list to Oklahoma State and OU.
Nickson made his decision after making an official trip to Norman over the weekend for the Sooners’ annual ChampU BBQ, which attracted several recruits and commits from Oklahoma. This year, the Brent Venables group
and company also brought a few former OU football players back to campus to talk to prospective students who were present at the cookout.
Nickson attends the same high school as experienced edge rusher Ethan Downs of the Sooners.
With the addition of 4-star wide receiver Emmanuel Choice of Lancaster, Texas, on Sunday afternoon, and Nickson on Tuesday, Oklahoma now has 18 verbal commits in the 2025 recruiting class. In the next cycle, Nickson will be joining three-star Wagoner (OK) edge rusher Alexander Shieldnight, four-star Dr. Henry Wise (MD) defensive lineman Trent Wilson, and three-star Lee’s Summit North (MO) interior lineman Ka’Mori Moore on the Sooners defensive line.
Nickson is a standout tight end and edge rusher for his high school squad, but his next level position will probably be on the defensive line. Nickson, who is listed at 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, is already well-built to compete in the SEC on the edge.
Apart from being among the best football players in the country, Nickson is a star on the basketball court as well, playing on the AAU circuit for Team Griffin.
The news that Weatherford standout Max Granville has committed to Penn State helps ease the pain for Miguel Chavis and team after Granville, an edge rusher at Fort Bend Christian Academy (TX), chose Penn State over Oklahoma on Monday night.
It wouldn’t be shocking to see a few more recruits declare their commitment to OU in the upcoming months after hosting a few prospects at the ChampU BBQ over the weekend. The Sooners have signed three 4-star talents in the previous eight days alone, with wide receiver Marcus Harris of Mater Dei (CA), Nickson, and Choice all declaring their commitments soon after visiting Norman.
