According to James Fegan of Sox Machine, the White Sox have released reliever Joe Barlow from his minor league deal. The pitcher, who is right-handed, was pitching for Triple-A Charlotte.

Barlow has been sidelined with injuries for the bulk of the year. It wasn’t until June 5 that he could make his Triple-A debut. For Charlotte over the last five weeks, Barlow has stolen the ball twelve times. He took a lot of hits, giving up 14 runs in 11 and a third innings. He got tagged for five home runs and walked eight in addition to striking out 14 opponents. Even in a Chicago bullpen that has been among the worst in the league, it was not going to get him a look.

The 28-year-old Barlow spent the previous three seasons in the major leagues with the Rangers, despite not pitching in the majors this season. Between 2021 and 2022, he served as Texas’ closer, making 66 appearances with a 2.81 earned run average in those two seasons. Even if Barlow’s walk and strikeout rates were never as good as his ERA, it’s still astonishing to see how quickly his figures declined. He was designated for assignment after the Rangers added pitching help at the last minute, and he only made 13 appearances under Bruce Bochy in the previous season. Barlow was claimed by the Royals, who kept him in Triple-A until waiving him themselves.

Barlow, fresh off a minor league stint, entered free agency last winter.Across 44 Triple-A frames, 5.52 ERA. Now that he’s back on the market, he’ll hunt for another minor league chance.
