Broncos rule rookie WR Devaughn Vele out for Week 2

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado: During the Denver Broncos’ Week 1 loss to Seattle last week, Devaughn Vele led the team in receptions. He won’t see the field until seven days from now.

Vele missed all three days of practice this week due to a rib injury, so the Broncos decided not to use him for their Week 2 matchup against Pittsburgh.

Regarding replacing Vele, Broncos coach Sean Payton stated, “We’ll have some options.”

The lone Broncos player on the 53-man roster that was ruled out of the Steelers game was the rookie seventh-round pick. Josh Reynolds, the wide receiver, Luke Wattenberg, the center, and left tackle Garrett Bolles are all cleared to play. After being limited on Thursday and missing practice on Wednesday, each of them had their full practice workload on Friday.

With eight receptions for 39 yards, Devaughn Vele set a team record at the end of Week 1. The Broncos struggled to come up with big plays, so he didn’t get much yardage after the catch. However, he did build on a camp where he proved to be a reliable short- to intermediate-range threat, which helped him get selected over some more experienced players like Tim Patrick.
It was a step up to take against Seattle’s first team last Sunday.

“It’s obvious that the guys are a little bit better,” Vele declared post-match. “You receive different stares since you’re running with the ones, you know. They introduce the entire playbook. Therefore, it’s a terrific exposure to help you try to pick things up quickly and figure out where you fit within this team.

Though Devaughn Vele will have to wait at least one more week to see the field, he has a place.
