Chargers officially sign Joe Alt, leave one rookie left unsigned

The LA Chargers surprised many fans and pundits alike by taking Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt

with the fifth pick. Because of the roster need and his irrefutable talent, many assumed the Bolts were

going to take LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with the pick.

Alas, general manager Joe Hortiz opted to add to the trenches instead with Alt, who is one of the safest

tackle picks in recent years. While anything can happen, it would be genuinely shocking if Alt does not

carve out a long-term, productive career in the NFL.

The Chargers are hoping that the best years of that career can be spent in Los Angeles. With just over a

month removed from the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bolts have finally agreed to terms on Alt’s rookie deal. The

After signing a contract, the Chargers merely have to sign second-round pick Ladd McConkey as a

rookie. With a wide receiver shortage in their attack, McConkey, who Los Angeles traded up for, is

expected to play a significant part.

Although McConkey is the final rookie to sign, Chargers supporters need not be very concerned about

this. Signing rookie contracts is almost never problematic, and when it is, as it was with Joey Bosa in

2016, it is usually worked out before the season starts.

When a rookie deal has a problem, it always has to do with the signing bonus and any offset language

included. That was the nature of Bosa’s problem.

In the end, it permeated training camp. With second-round picks typically having far lesser signing

bonuses than high first-round picks, McConkey and the Chargers have less to lose.

A deal with McConkey will be completed with plenty of time to spare, just like with Alt. When a deal is

completed is more important than if it will be completed.
