The Red Sox’s only trade deadline addition was Danny Jansen, who was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays to serve as backup catcher to Connor Wong. So far, the trade has worked out well, with Jansen posting a 1.098 OPS in 26 plate appearances for the Red Sox.
Aside from the players traded to the Blue Jays, the trade cost them Reese McGuire, who was DFAd along with Chase Anderson to create way for Jansen and Yohan Ramirez. McGuire was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester and has one hit and five strikeouts in 12 plate appearances.
McGuire spoke with the media at Polar Park on Tuesday and was asked about the Jansen trade and the loss of his roster position. It’s safe to say he was surprised by what happened.
According to MassLive, McGuire stated that the deal for Jansen caught the entire team off guard. He stated it “kicked him to the ground,” since McGuire knew the move meant he was about to lose his roster place.
Reese McGuire admits to being blindsided by the Red Sox trade deadline actions.
McGuire believed that adding him to the roster could have improved numerous teams’ backup catcher positions, but he declined to reveal which teams.
While the move may have surprised some in the clubhouse, the Red Sox made the proper choice in moving on from McGuire. He had a strong start to the season, but he hadn’t hit well in several months by the time they acquired Jansen, and his defence behind the plate was subpar at best. Unless something happens to Jansen or Wong, McGuire is unlikely to return to the majors this season.
