Injured Jason Holder Replaced by Obed McCoy in West Indies Squad for 2024 T20 World Cup
The West Indies, co-hosts of the 2024 T20 World Cup, have selected pace bowler Obed McCoy to start in place of the injured Jason Holder. West Indies, which is in Group C of the competition, will take on Papua New Guinea in their opening game on June 2 in Guyana.
Holder suffered the injury while playing for Worcestershire in the 2024 County Championship, according to a statement released by Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Sunday. The statement further stated that the team’s medical experts will offer the fast-bowling all-rounder all the assistance he needs to make a full and quick recovery.
In actuality, Obed McCoy’s right leg injury at the 2021 T20 World Cup prompted West Indies to call up Jason Holder.
“Jason is a skilled participant in our arrangement. There’s little doubt that his absence will be felt on and off the field. We hope to see a fully recovered Jason here with us shortly. Even though it is sad to lose a player of Jason’s ability, we have faith in Obed McCoy’s skills.
“Obed has performed with amazing skill and promise, and this chance will help him further display his abilities on a global platform. “We think he’ll infuse the team with new, vibrant energy,” chief selector Desmond Haynes stated.
McCoy, who is renowned for his deft variations, especially towards the close of the innings, has taken 33 wickets in 27 Twenty20 matches this year. He is currently playing for the West Indies A squad in their T20I series against South Africa in Jamaica. He was the team’s top wicket-taker during their recent trip of Nepal.
