This summer, the Chicago Bulls are regarded as one of the biggest wild cards, although they’ll probably come back with their renowned “big three.”
Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic reports that re-signing their 34-year-old swingman DeMar DeRozan to a multi-year contract may be a part of their plan.
Mayberry stated, “The Bulls would be happy to re-sign DeRozan on a two-year deal.” “Obviously, DeRozan’s side would prefer greater security. The Bulls are known for generously adding player options to contracts, thus DeRozan’s agreement may also benefit from this practice.”
The Bulls’ most reliable player last season was DeRozan, the ninth overall pick in 2009, who averaged 24.0 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game on 48.0% shooting. The Bulls may offer him a new contract worth up to $40 million over the course of two years.
“The sum will be substantial—probably more than $40 million annually—but it won’t have as much of an impact on the Bulls’ long-term freedom. Chicago desires to hold onto DeRozan, but only with a fair commitment.
With a 39-43 record, the Bulls placed ninth in the East this season. They were unable to gain momentum in the standings despite having DeRozan and two-time All-Star Zach LaVine (who subsequently asked to be traded) on the team, and they had no chance of sustaining an effective offence without former UCLA standout Lonzo Ball.
The burden is on the Bulls to save current regime this summer, or at the very least take steps to raise their ceiling, as calls for a rebuild become more and more urgent. The Bulls might be able to make the playoffs if they can recruit some supporting players and bolster their bench, but I don’t think they will ever be a true contender in the current incarnation.
